Air District Fact

Due to the fact that asbestos has been used extensively in residential, commercial and industrial construction, District Regulation 11-2-401.3 requires that for every renovation involving the removal of 100 sq ft/lin ft or greater of Regulated Asbestos Containing Material, and for every demolition (even when no asbestos is present), a notification must be made to the BAAQMD at least 10 working days (except in special circumstances) prior to commencement of demolition/renovation.

Southern Alameda County Resource Team

The Southern Alameda County Spare the Air Resource Team has worked to reduce greenhouse gas production and traffic congestion by promoting commute alternatives to solo driving and educating drivers about the expense and waste of unnecessary idling.

In 2011, the Team is focusing its energies on school commuting. Team members have developed banners and stickers with an anti-idling message for schools, schoolchildren, and their parents. The team also purchased radar devices for local school districts to use in Safe Routes to Schools classroom curricula. The team is continuing to look for ways to inform parents of web resources they can use to develop school carpools and connect with other parents to form walking school buses or biking groups. Another area of interest is exploring ways to audit neighborhoods around schools to identify whether crosswalks, signals, or other changes might be needed to ensure safe walking and biking routes.

In past years, the Southern Alameda County Team has offered vanpool incentives, hosted a booth at the Fremont Festival of the Arts on commute greening, held, with the City of Fremont, an employer commute solutions workshop at the City’s Northport Loop Business Park, and developed an Alameda County commuter resource guide.

If you would like to join in the Team's efforts to promote commute alternatives, reduce traffic congestion, and cut back greenhouse gases, please contact Ariel Ambruster 510-763-2500 ext. 5 or aambruster@communityfocus.org.
