Asbestos is a fibrous mineral naturally occurring in ultramafic rock (a rock type commonly found in California ), and used as a processed component of building materials. Due to the fact that asbestos has been proven to cause a number of disabling and fatal diseases, such as asbestosis and lung cancer, it is strictly regulated based either on its natural widespread occurrence, or in its use as a building material.

Equipment Registration

The owners of the select types of equipment that operate within the Bay Area must register their equipment with the Air District. The registration process allows for the operation of the equipment within the San Francisco Bay Area without a Permit to Operate, provided the equipment meets the published regulatory criteria. These registrations must be renewed periodically on a schedule set forth by the Air District.

The registration process is open for the following types of equipment:

  • Agricultural Diesel Engines
  • Industrial, Institutional, and Commercial Boilers, Steam Generators, and Process Heaters
  • Commercial Cooking Operations (Chain-Driven Charbroilers)
  • Graphic Arts Operations
  • Mobile Refinishing (Coating) Operations
  • Portable Equipment (PERP)

The online registration process for the following types of equipment will be available soon:

  • Under-Fire Charbroilers (coming soon)
  • Dry Cleaners registration process will not be online for several months.  Dry Cleaners can be registered by completing and submitting data forms P - 101B and D.

Please note that the Air District also offers the Stipulated Enforcement Program for Non-Compliable Portable Diesel Engines.
