Air Quality Fact

The earth’s surface and ocean temperatures are rising, with the 1990’s the warmest decade on record. Today, most scientists agree that man made (or anthropogenic) sources of greenhouse gases are, at least partly, to blame. The largest source of greenhouse gases in the Bay Area is mobile sources. Carbon dioxide is the most abundant of the greenhouse gases; however, other gases like methane and nitrous oxide are also involved.

Heavy-Duty Vehicle and Equipment Projects

The Strategic Incentives Division (SID) administers a number of programs that fund projects to reduce emissions from qualifying heavy-duty diesel vehicles and equipment. The funds can be used to replace existing equipment, retrofit the equipment with emission controls, repower the equipment with a lower polluting engine or be used towards the purchase of new equipment. Project funds are available at various times for the following types of diesel and alternative fuel heavy-duty vehicles and equipment:

  1. On-road trucks
  2. School buses
  3. Off-road equipment (construction equipment, cargo handling equipment, etc.)
  4. Marine vessels & shore power
  5. Locomotives
  6. Agricultural irrigation pumps
