The Air District is offering $6 million in grant funding to public agencies to support projects that improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by reducing vehicle trips and miles traveled in the Bay Area.

Spare the Air Status

Eligible projects include transportation services and bicycle facilities that will reduce single-occupancy vehicle trips. This program is funded through the Air District’s Transportation Fund for Clean Air Regional Fund, which provides grants to improve air quality within the nine-county Bay Area by reducing emissions of criteria pollutants from on-road vehicles.

Applicants must attend at least one pre-application workshop. Workshops will be held online via webinar and are limited to 100 attendees. Registration is required to attend a workshop. The workshops will cover program requirements, applicant eligibility, project eligibility, the application process, and application evaluation criteria. Attendance to any pre-application workshop that occurred before August 2019 will not count toward this requirement.

The following workshops have been scheduled:

Based on demand, additional workshops may be scheduled. Applicants may apply online via www.baaqmd.gov/tripreduction. Hard copies of the online application and required supplemental documents may be sent to:

Bay Area Air Quality Management District
Strategic Incentives Division
Attn: Chengfeng Wang, Air Quality Program Manager
375 Beale Street, Suite 600
San Francisco, CA 94105

The program will begin accepting applications after the first workshop on August 13, 2019. Online and hard copy applications must be received by 4 PM, September 10, 2019.

Applications will be reviewed and scored based on the projects' cost-effectiveness in reducing emissions. If the program is not oversubscribed after the deadline, applications will continue to be accepted. All applications must still meet all eligibility requirements. Once an application is determined to be complete and eligible, these applications will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. When funding is exhausted, all eligible projects may be placed on a contingency list in case additional funding becomes available.
