KEEP YOUR LAWN "GREEN" In the spring and summer, gasoline-powered lawn mowers create an estimated nine tons of air pollution every day in the Bay Area. Grass trimmings also make up a significant portion of the waste that gets buried in local landfills. By switching to an electric mulching mower, you can save time and money, and cut down on air pollution and yard waste.

This May, the Air District will sponsor mower exchange events in three Bay Area counties. A $100 rebate will be available to those who wish to exchange their old gas-powered mower for a new air pollution-free electric one. You don't need to be a resident of the county where the event is held in order to participate, but you do need to live in one of the nine Bay Area counties.

Interested residents should bring their mowers, drained of gas and oil, to a participating Home Depot store at the date and time listed below. You must turn in your old mower for recycling to get the $100 discount. In return, you may purchase either a Black & Decker corded MM 575 model for a reduced price of $99 plus tax, or the larger MM 875 corded mower for the reduced price of $129 plus tax. All events are on a first-come, first-served basis, for as long as supplies last.

Don’t pour your used oil and gas on the ground or down the storm drain. Store it in a container, and call your local solid waste management agency for disposal information.
