Wood Stove

Changeout Programs

The Air District periodically sponsors rebate programs for replacing older, more highly polluting wood-burning appliances with newer, cleaner models.

Wood Stove Rebate Programs

Bay Area Program

On February 17, 2016, the Air District's Board of Directors approved $3 million in funding for the upgrade of wood-burning devices to cleaner heating options. The Wood Smoke Reduction Incentive Program provides financial assistance to Bay Area homeowners who replace older, more highly polluting fireplaces or wood stoves with qualifying cleaner electric heat pumps or natural gas or propane stoves or inserts.

Funding will also be available for residents who choose to decommission their working wood-burning fireplaces and non-EPA-certified wood stoves by permanently taking them out of service.

Priority has been given to low-income residents, residents located in areas highly affected by wood smoke and households exempt from Winter Spare the Air Alert burn bans due to the fact that their wood-burning device was their sole source of heat.

This program launched on August 26, 2016, and all new applications received will be placed on a waitlist. If you are placed on the waitlist, we will notify you if, and when, more funding becomes available.

Marin County Program

The County of Marin and Bay Area Air Quality Management District are currently offering rebates for the proper removal and replacement of non-EPA certified wood-burning appliances with cleaner-burning appliances, such as EPA-certified wood stoves, pellet stoves, or propane appliances.

Rebates are $250 for removal of non-certified devices, and $750 for removal AND replacement of non-certified wood-burning appliance with a cleaner appliance.

This program is only available to homes in the San Geronimo Valley (Forest Knolls, Lagunitas, San Geronimo and Woodacre).

Rebates are available through August 1, 2013 or until funds are exhausted.
