The Air District showcased the Bay Area’s leadership in clean air, climate innovation, and equity at the United Nations Climate Change Conference or COP30, held in Belém, Brazil from November 10 through November 21. During a virtual media availability on November 13, Air District leadership reflected on the importance of local and regional action to drive global climate progress.

Twenty three shipping companies participated in the Protecting Blue Whales & Blue Skies vessel speed reduction program in 2022, contributing to cleaner air, safer whales, and a quieter ocean.  Companies are recognized for their vessels transiting at ten knots or less in the San Francisco Bay Area and the Southern California region. 

The Air District and its partners in an initiative to cut air pollution and protect whales today announced results from the 2017 program, which for the first time included speed reduction zones in the San Francisco Bay Area in addition to the Santa Barbara Channel region.

The Air District is offering grants of up to $25,000 to nonprofit partners and community-based organizations to support and sponsor community-based solutions that address air pollution while also helping reduce our global climate impact. 

The Air District and partners in an initiative to cut air pollution and protect endangered whales announced results from the 2019 program and recognized the 15 shipping companies that participated, reducing speeds to 10 knots or less in the San Francisco Bay Area and the Santa Barbara Channel region.

The Air District, in collaboration with the UC Berkeley Cool Climate Network, has developed a consumption-based greenhouse gas inventory for the Bay Area to tell a more complete story of how the region contributes to global climate change.
