Today the Air District's Board of Directors unanimously adopted Regulation 11-18, Reduction of Risk from Air Toxic Emissions at Existing Facilities, considered to be the most health-protective toxic air pollution risk control measure in the nation.

The Air District is announcing the availability of $1.5 million through Cycle 2 of the James Cary Smith Community Grant Program for community groups, neighborhood associations, and nonprofits to participate in decisions that impact their environment and health. 

The Clean Air Center Program provides funding for county agencies in the San Francisco Bay Area to create a network of clean air centers to mitigate the adverse public health impacts due to wildfires and other smoke events.

The Air District is announcing the launch of its 2022 James Cary Smith Community Grant Program, which is funding more than 30 community groups and nonprofit organizations to engage community members in decisions that impact their air quality and health.

The Air District, Santa Clara Valley Medical Center and Public Health today discussed the urgent need for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to reevaluate and update the federal air pollution standard for fine particulate pollution, also known as PM 2.5.

The Air District’s Board of Directors today adopted amendments to Regulation 2, Rule 1: General Requirements, and Regulation 2, Rule 5: New Source Review of Toxic Air Contaminants to better address air pollution in areas overburdened by environmental and health stressors.

The Air District announced today it has reached two separate agreements with Chevron and Martinez Refining Company resulting in an end to the litigation against the agency over its groundbreaking Regulation 6, Rule 5, major emissions reductions from both refineries, unprecedented penalties and other payments of up to $138 million, and a Richmond-area Community Air Quality Fund, among other benefits. The Air District estimates that the emission reductions achieved by the rule will result in tens of millions of dollars per year in health benefits by reducing early deaths and other health impacts of exposure to particulate matter.

The Air District is working with the West Oakland Environmental Indicators Project and the West Oakland Health Council, through the Clean Air Filtration Program, to provide portable air filtration units to low-income residents of West Oakland diagnosed with a respiratory illness.

During this challenging time, the Air District is asking the public to not burn wood in their fireplaces, outdoor fire pits or woodstoves during the shelter-in-place order for COVID-19 to protect the respiratory health of all Bay Area residents.

The Air District is inviting residents to participate in the sixth annual California Clean Air Day on October 4. Designed around individual actions, the event is a statewide initiative built on the idea that shared experiences unite people to improve community health.
