Earth Day was founded in 1970 as a day of education about environmental issues. It is now a global celebration to raise public awareness of pollution.

Spare the Air Status

Over the decades, Earth Day has brought hundreds of millions of people into the environmental movement, creating opportunities for civic engagement and volunteerism in 193 countries. Earth Day engages more than 1 billion people every year and has become a major steppingstone along the pathway of engagement around the protection of the planet.

Now, the fight for a clean environment continues with increasing urgency, as the effects of climate change become more apparent every day. As such, the theme for Earth Day 2021 is “Restore Our Earth.” For decades, the Air District has focused on developing comprehensive rules and strategies to improve and protect air quality and the climate.

Residents can check the Air District’s Facebook and Twitter feeds to download free Earth Day video conference backgrounds, view photographs showing air pollution from decades past in the Bay Area, and read factoids highlighting improvements in public health and air quality.
