The Air District Board of Directors has adopted amendments to Regulation 9, Rules 4 and 6, to eliminate emissions of nitrogen oxides, or NOx, from residential and commercial natural gas furnaces and water heaters in the Bay Area by requiring new appliances to be zero-NOx.

The Air District will host a public learning session on Tuesday, October 22, virtually via Zoom, regarding adopted rules (“Building Appliance Rules”) impacting nitrogen oxide, or NOx, emissions from natural gas-fired water heating appliances. Members of the public are invited to attend, learn, and ask questions about these rules.

On July 14, the Air District released draft amended rule language outlining potential exemptions and a delayed start date for the existing zero-NOx residential water heater requirement under Air District Rule 9-6. The Air District is publishing the draft language for public review and comment ahead of the Board of Directors' consideration for adoption this fall.
