The Air District has expanded the eligible model year for participating in the Vehicle Buy Back Program to 1996 vehicles and older. Previously only 1994 and older vehicles were accepted.

Effective July 1, the Air District is expanding the Vehicle Buy Back Program, which takes older, high-polluting vehicles off the road that would otherwise likely remain in operation. The program is increasing the incentive amount to $2,000 per vehicle and including vehicles that are model year 2000 and older.

Starting July 1, 2024, the Air District will offer $1,500 to Bay Area residents to improve local air quality by scrapping their 1998 and older vehicles through the Vehicle Buy Back Program.

The Air District, along with other top California policymakers, testified today in strong opposition to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s proposed rule that would roll back existing vehicle standards.
