The Air District's Board of Directors unanimously adopted strong new provisions that will significantly improve the agency’s wood burning regulation designed to further safeguard public health against the hazards of fine particle pollution. The changes to the Air District’s wood burning regulation tighten exemptions and requirements from the original rule which was adopted in July 2008.

On July 14, the Air District released draft amended rule language outlining potential exemptions and a delayed start date for the existing zero-NOx residential water heater requirement under Air District Rule 9-6. The Air District is publishing the draft language for public review and comment ahead of the Board of Directors' consideration for adoption this fall.

The Air District's Board of Directors approved allocating $4 million in Community Air Protection Incentives funding to support home and school air filtration programs in Bay Area communities at their June 4 meeting. As part of this initiative, the Air District Board authorized up to $1.3 million of upgrades in public schools in Richmond, North Richmond, San Pablo, and Tara Hills. An additional $1.7 million will be used to expand air filtration upgrades in schools in Bayview-Hunters Point in San Francisco, and $1 million will be allocated to the Air District’s Home Air Filtration program.

The Air District's Board of Directors approved $3 million in funding for the upgrade of wood-burning devices with cleaner heating options. Incentives for this program are expected to be available later this summer. The funding will provide assistance for potentially up to 1,300 Bay Area households to replace older, more polluting fireplaces or wood stoves with cleaner electric heat pumps, or natural gas or propane stoves or inserts.

The Air District is sending representatives to attend the United Nations Climate Change Conference, or COP29, in Baku, Azerbaijan from November 11 through November 22. Air District Board of Directors Chair Davina Hurt and Executive Officer Dr. Philip Fine will hold a virtual press conference on Tuesday, November 19 at 10 AM.
