The Air District has approved a $100,000 grant to the Prescott-Joseph Center for the expansion of the Breathmobile to children and families living in the cities of San Pablo and Hayward, and the neighborhood of Chinatown in Oakland.

The Air District announced today that Radius Recycling, formerly Schnitzer Steel, has agreed to pay $575,000 to settle air quality violations that occurred at its facilities in West Oakland and San Jose. The penalty resolves eight notices of violation. 

The Air District received a ruling from an Alameda County Superior Court judge yesterday finding that an abatement order to shut down diesel generators at the Green Sage cannabis facilities in Oakland is immediately enforceable by further order of the court.

The San Francisco Bay Area Water Emergency Transportation Authority and the Air District announced that WETA’s Gemini Class Clean Air Conversion Project has been completed, resulting in a substantial decrease in air pollution emissions from four San Francisco Bay Ferry vessels serving Oakland, Alameda, and Richmond.

The Air District is issuing an air quality advisory for smoke in Southern Solano, northern Contra Costa, and northwestern Alameda counties, specifically communities between I-80 and I-680 bridges (Martinez, Pacheco, Concord and Port Chicago), but with some impact possible southward to Oakland, due to a fire at Valero.

The annual Youth for Environment and Sustainability, or YES, Conference, co-sponsored by the Air District, returns to the Bay Area on Saturday, February 24, 2018.  It will be held at Laney College, 900 Fallon Street in Oakland from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. The free day-long regional conference will bring together middle and high school students from the nine Bay Area counties to discuss topics ranging from climate change and public health to transportation and air pollution.

The Air District and Alameda County District Attorney Ursula Jones Dickson filed a joint civil lawsuit against Radius Recycling, formerly Schnitzer Steel Industries, for air quality violations related to the fire at the company’s facility in West Oakland on August 9-10, 2023. In addition, previous enforcement actions by the Air District and the district attorney required Radius Recycling to install new equipment that has eliminated hundreds of tons of air pollution and reduced cancer risk by 84 percent since 2022; today the Air District finalized the operating permit for this important equipment.
