The Air District is announcing the Bay Area Regional Climate Action Plan, a visionary initiative to aggressively fight climate change and transition the Bay Area to a carbon-neutral future.
This regional planning effort integrates and expands on work by the State of California and local municipalities without duplicating other initiatives, filling key gaps and enabling existing efforts to be successfully implemented in ways that are efficient and equitable.
The plan outlines actionable and impactful strategies to reduce climate pollution, improve regional and local air quality, create jobs and spur economic growth, and enhance health and quality of life in the Bay Area. It sets greenhouse gas reduction pathways across key sectors of the economy including transportation, buildings, energy, waste, and natural and working lands to support the State’s goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions 40 percent below 1990 levels by 2030.
Bold local action will be essential to meeting this goal while delivering tangible benefits for Bay Area residents, especially frontline communities that bear disproportionate impacts from air pollution and climate change.
Community and stakeholder engagement have been central components of the planning process with robust input from community-based organizations, local governments, technical stakeholders, and the public to ensure the plan reflects local priorities and needs.
Successful implementation will require coordinated leadership across governments, community organizations, businesses, and residents, along with sustained accountability, transparency, workforce development, and funding to equitably deliver cleaner air, healthier communities, and a resilient, carbon-neutral regional economy.
