The Air District’s 2015-2016 Winter Spare the Air season ended February 29, with only one Winter Spare the Air Alert issued. The nine-county region saw consistently cleaner air this season as frequent storm systems moved through the Bay Area beginning in November and continuing through early February, helping to disperse air pollution.

The Air District has issued 3 Notices of Violation to Valero for violations of air quality regulations and/or permit conditions for the May 5 fire. This is an ongoing investigation, and more violations may be issued.

Although gathering around a fireplace may be a Christmas tradition for many, there are serious health impacts associated with wood burning. Use of all wood-burning devices is prohibited.

Regional wood burning and easterly winds transporting air pollution into the Bay Area from the Central Valley have contributed to high overnight concentrations of fine particle pollution and unhealthy air quality. Breezier northeasterly winds will bring more substantial improvement in air quality for Monday.

The Air District is issuing the winter season’s first Spare the Air Alert for tomorrow, Friday, December 15, which bans burning wood, manufactured fire logs or any other solid fuel, both indoors and outdoors. Smoke from increased wood burning combined with light winds and low overnight temperatures is expected to cause unhealthy air quality. High pressure over northern California will act like a lid, trapping smoke at ground level. Offshore winds may also transport air pollution from the Central Valley into the Bay Area.

The Air District has issued Crown Hill Materials, a concrete facility in Vallejo, a Notice of Violation for operating a concrete batch plant without the required air quality permit. The Air District announced a recent settlement with Shell Oil Products U.S. to pay a $208,000 civil penalty for air quality violations at its refinery in Martinez. The settlement covers 12 notices of violation that the Air District issued for incidents that occurred in 2013.

The Air District announced that Phillips 66 Company has agreed to pay $99,400 to to settle a group of 13 Notices of Violation issued for air quality violations that occurred at its Rodeo refinery in 2015.

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District today announced a recent settlement with Chevron U.S.A to pay a $146,000 civil penalty for air quality violations at its refinery in Richmond. The settlement covers 22 notices of violation that the Air District issued for incidents that occurred between 2012 and 2014. 

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District announced today that the agency’s independent Hearing Board has ordered Tesla to correct air quality violations at its electric vehicle manufacturing facility in Fremont. A written order is expected to be issued this week.  

The Air District issued two public nuisance violations, one to Phillips 66 in Rodeo and one to the operator of the Yamuna Spirit oil tanker, for a September 20, 2016, incident near the Phillips 66 Refinery in Rodeo that resulted in nearly 1,500 odor complaints from the Vallejo area.
