The Air District has released for public review a new draft air quality plan – a call to action to Spare the Air and Cool the Climate (YouTube streaming video). The 2017 Plan aims to lead the region to a post-carbon economy, to continue progress toward attaining all state and federal air quality standards, and to eliminate health risk disparities from exposure to air pollution among Bay Area communities.

The Air District is issuing an air quality advisory for wildfire smoke for Friday, July 19. Smoke from fires in Northern California is expected to impact the Bay Area on Friday. Conditions can change rapidly and the amount and location of smoke at ground level is hard to predict. The public can check for real-time smoke pollution levels in their local area with the U.S. EPA’s Fire and Smoke Map.

The Air District celebrated the exceptional public service of outgoing Board Director and former Mayor of the City of Berkeley, Thomas H. Bates, by awarding him a Lifetime Achievement Award at today’s Board of Directors meeting. The Lifetime Achievement Award is the first of its kind issued by the Air District and honors the distinguished career of those serving to improve air quality and protect the climate for all residents of the Bay Area.

The Air District's Board of Directors has approved the grant guidelines for the Local Community Benefits Fund, marking a major milestone for the Bay Reinvesting Penalties for Air Improvement and Resilience program, or Bay REPAIR program. The program will begin accepting grant applications on Jan. 29, 2026, opening a new opportunity for community-led projects that reduce air pollution, improve public health and strengthen community resilience in Benicia, Richmond and surrounding communities.

It will be held at Laney College, 900 Fallon Street in Oakland from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. The free day-long regional conference will bring together middle and high school students from the nine Bay Area counties to discuss topics ranging from climate change and public health to transportation and air pollution.

Program’s grant application process to access at least $10 million in grant funding to offset the cost of purchasing and installing new chargers for light-duty electric vehicles at multi-family housing facilities, destinations, transit parking locations, and workplaces across the Bay Area. This funding is available to businesses, homeowner associations, non-profits, public agencies, and tribes. Applications are being accepted now through June 6, 2025, at 5PM.
