In the wake of record-breaking wildfires and hurricanes that have decimated the U.S., the Trump administration has announced a directive today to order the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to rewrite the Clean Power Plan and jeopardize hard-fought climate gains. The effects of climate change are being realized worldwide as global temperatures rise and catastrophic weather patterns escalate.

The Air District is inviting residents to participate in the sixth annual California Clean Air Day on October 4. Designed around individual actions, the event is a statewide initiative built on the idea that shared experiences unite people to improve community health. 

The Air District has expanded the Clean Cars for All program to the entire nine-county Bay Area within the Air District’s jurisdiction.

The Air District has released for public review a new draft air quality plan – a call to action to Spare the Air and Cool the Climate (YouTube streaming video). The 2017 Plan aims to lead the region to a post-carbon economy, to continue progress toward attaining all state and federal air quality standards, and to eliminate health risk disparities from exposure to air pollution among Bay Area communities.

The Air District invites the public to attend a scoping meeting at the Air District’s Metro Center to provide comment on the potential environmental impacts that should be evaluated in the draft environmental impact report being prepared for the 2016 Clean Air Plan and Regional Climate Protection Strategy.

The Air District’s Clean Heating Efficiently with Electric Technology, or Clean HEET, Program will begin accepting applications for grants that can help to offset the cost of switching from a wood-burning stove or fireplace insert to an electric heat pump. The program is designed to improve air quality in communities by replacing polluting wood-burning heating devices with cleaner heating options. 

The annual Youth for Environment and Sustainability, or YES, Conference, co-sponsored by the Air District, returns to the Bay Area on Saturday, February 24, 2018.  It will be held at Laney College, 900 Fallon Street in Oakland from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. The free day-long regional conference will bring together middle and high school students from the nine Bay Area counties to discuss topics ranging from climate change and public health to transportation and air pollution.

The Air District is working with the West Oakland Environmental Indicators Project and the West Oakland Health Council, through the Clean Air Filtration Program, to provide portable air filtration units to low-income residents of West Oakland diagnosed with a respiratory illness.

The Air District is announcing the expansion of its Clean Cars for All grant program, which offers incentives of up to $9,500 for income-qualified Bay Area residents to retire older cars and replace them with a hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or electric vehicle, or to get a pre-loaded Clipper Card for public transit. 

The Air District, California Air Resources Board and San Francisco Department of Emergency Management announced today the launch of the state’s first Clean Air Center in the Bayview Hunters Point neighborhood in San Francisco. In the coming weeks, more than 300 Clean Air Centers will be available throughout the Bay Area, when air quality is poor due to wildfires.

The Air District has awarded a loan guarantee to King Solarman, a provider of smart solar generators in California. Their products replace loud and aging diesel generators used for mobile light towers and surveillance stations.

Today, the South Coast Air Quality Management District filed a petition challenging the U.S. EPA and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s rollbacks to the Safer Affordable Fuel-Efficient Vehicles Rule initiated by the Trump Administration. The Bay Area Air Quality Management District and the Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District have joined South Coast AQMD as co-petitioners.
