Learn about the Air District's regulatory air monitoring network and special air quality studies.
The Air District maintains a comprehensive air quality monitoring network of 29 stations distributed among the nine Bay Area counties.
Various instruments at these stations measure concentrations of pollutants for which health-based ambient air quality standards have been set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the California Air Resources Board, known as criteria air pollutants. The network also measures concentrations of various pollutants that increase the understanding of the sources of the criteria air pollutants, as well as pollutants designated as Toxic Air Contaminants by the state of California.
This information is used to determine compliance with state and federal air quality standards, prepare air quality forecasts, develop air quality plans, provide information for permit modeling, prepare environmental impact reports, and track air quality trends.

The Air District released its latest Air Monitoring Network Plan(7 Mb PDF) on May 18, 2026, for public comment. The plan provides a summary of the regulatory air monitoring network in 2025 and proposed network changes through 2027. The proposed changes may be found in the section titled “Proposed Modifications to the Network through 2027.” The Air District is soliciting comments from the public on this plan from May 18, 2026, through June 17, 2026.
