The Air District is extending an air quality advisory due to wildfire smoke from Canadian wildfires in the Bay Area through Wednesday, June 4. Smoke from various Canadian wildfires in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba is expected to impact air quality in the Bay Area through Wednesday. Conditions can change rapidly and the amount and location of smoke at ground level are hard to predict. The public can check for real-time smoke pollution levels in their local area with the U.S. EPA’s Fire and Smoke Map. Smoky, hazy skies may be visible, the smell of smoke is possible, and air quality may become unhealthy through Wednesday, June 4.

The Air District is hosting a virtual public workshop on February 4, 2021, from 6 - 8 PM., focusing on developing draft amendments to Regulation 6 Rule 5: Particulate Emissions from Refinery Fluidized Catalytic Cracking Units, in order to further reduce particulate matter emissions from petroleum refineries.

The Air District Board of Directors has adopted amendments to Regulation 9, Rules 4 and 6, to eliminate emissions of nitrogen oxides, or NOx, from residential and commercial natural gas furnaces and water heaters in the Bay Area by requiring new appliances to be zero-NOx.

The Air District is issuing a Spare the Air Alert for smog for Tuesday, September 3 through Wednesday, September 4. Air quality is forecast to be unhealthy. High inland temperatures and light winds, combined with motor vehicle exhaust, will create elevated concentrations of ozone, or smog.

Smoke from wildfires in Southern California is expected to continue impacting the Bay Area on Monday with smoky and hazy skies. Pollution levels are not expected to exceed federal health standards and no Spare the Air Alert is in effect for Monday. A Spare the Air Alert for ozone, or smog, remains in effect for Sunday, October 3.
