The Air District is issuing a smoke advisory for the North and East Bay areas, today Monday, October 16, 2017. Unhealthy air quality from the wildfires continues to plague the North Bay counties. Due to active wildfires and changing wind patterns, air quality throughout the Bay Area could be impacted for many days to come. Outside of the active fire areas, air quality will be variable and unpredictable.

The program will open at 10AM on August 26, 2016, on a first-come, first-served basis for homeowners and landlords to replace their wood burning device. Funding will be prioritized for low-income residents, residents located in areas highly affected by wood smoke, and households exempt from burn bans due to a wood-burning device being the sole source of heat. Starting November 1, 2016, anyone whose sole source of heat is a wood-burning device must use an EPA-certified or pellet-fueled device that is registered with the Air District to qualify for an exemption.

The Air District is extending the Spare the Air Alert that is in place today, Saturday, August 28, through tomorrow, Sunday, August 29, due to wildfire smoke. The burning of wood, manufactured fire logs or any other solid fuel, both indoors and outdoors is prohibited.

The Air District is issuing an air quality advisory through Monday due to wildfires that began overnight throughout the greater Bay Area. Numerous lightning strikes have sparked wildfires across the region. Air quality may deteriorate in areas near or downwind of the fires, but PM2.5 is not expected to exceed the national 24-hour standard.

The Air District is amending Regulation 6, Rule 3 to further reduce local and regional wintertime fine particulates and visible emissions from wood-burning devices used as a source of primary or supplemental heat or for ambiance. Public comments on the draft staff report and rule must be received by close of business Monday, August 31, 2015.

Incentives for this program are expected to be available later this summer. The funding will provide assistance for potentially up to 1,300 Bay Area households to replace older, more polluting fireplaces or wood stoves with cleaner electric heat pumps, or natural gas or propane stoves or inserts.
