The Air District and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission are announcing a new compliance option for the regional Commuter Benefits Program. The Air District’s Board of Directors today adopted amendments to Regulation 6, Rule 5: Particulate Emissions from Refinery Fluidized Catalytic Cracking Units to further reduce particulate matter emissions from petroleum refineries. The rule is now the most health-protective and stringent regulation of its kind in the country.

Air quality in the Bay Area continues to be very unhealthy, especially in the fire-impacted counties of Napa, Sonoma and Solano. The smoke plume from the fires has now moved to the South Bay and air quality will be unpredictable and impact the entire Bay Area through the weekend.

On July 15, 2020, the Air District’s Board of Directors will hold a public hearing to consider approval of Emissions Statement Certification for the 1997, 2008 and 2015 8-hour Ozone National Ambient Air Quality Standards. The public comment period is now open and will close on Monday, July 6, 2020.

The Air District and Contra Costa Health Services continue to work together to investigate the source of odors that fouled San Francisco and Richmond on December 28 and 29. The joint investigation has ruled out any sources on San Francisco Bay, including ships or oil spills on the water, and now centers on Chevron’s Richmond refinery and other potential sources in Richmond, such as the waste water treatment plant, waste management facility, and other industrial sources.

Program’s grant application process to access at least $10 million in grant funding to offset the cost of purchasing and installing new chargers for light-duty electric vehicles at multi-family housing facilities, destinations, transit parking locations, and workplaces across the Bay Area. This funding is available to businesses, homeowner associations, non-profits, public agencies, and tribes. Applications are being accepted now through June 6, 2025, at 5PM.
