The Air District is continuing existing efforts to reduce air pollution and exposures in impacted communities through the state’s Community Air Protection Program, also known as Assembly Bill 617. This effort focuses on community-based emissions reductions in neighborhoods most disproportionately impacted by air pollution.
In February 2023, the California Air Resources Board voted to support the Air District’s partnership with the Bayview Hunters Point Community Advocates and the Marie Harrison Community Foundation to conduct a Community Emissions Reduction Plan process that will serve as a blueprint for improving air quality in Bayview Hunters Point/Southeast San Francisco. To further guide and develop this air pollution reduction planning and strategies, the Air District and Community Co-Lead Partners, Bayview Hunters Point Community Advocates and Marie Harrison Community Foundation, will review the applications and make selections to create a representative Community Steering Committee.
Bayview Hunters Point/Southeast San Francisco was selected amongst high priority communities for focused action in the Bay Area due to longstanding air quality challenges, environmental justice grievances, and health inequities. Over the years, the Air District has partnered with many Bayview Hunters Point/Southeast San Francisco organizations to build community capacity, increase understanding of local air pollution and environmental justice issues, and bring together cross-agency approaches for improving environmental health and local air quality. With the Air District's support, two Community Co-Lead Partners, the Marie Harrison Community Foundation and the Bayview Hunters Point Community Advocates, are now working together to co-lead this AB 617 Community Emissions Reduction Plan.
