The Air District is announcing the start of the Winter Spare the Air season, Wednesday, November 1. The Air District calls Winter Spare the Air Alerts when air quality is forecast to be unhealthy due to fine particulate pollution, primarily from wood smoke. When an alert is in effect during the Winter Spare the Air season, from November 1 through February 28, it is illegal to burn wood, manufactured fire logs, or any other solid fuel both indoors and outdoors in the Bay Area for a full 24-hours.

The Air District has awarded the 2022 Spare the Air Leadership Award to MCE for their Low-Income Families and Tenants or LIFT program, which has already given over $1 million in rebates to 680 homes, saving over 7,800 kilowatt-hours of energy per year.

Smoke from the Pedro Fire and other California wildfires is expected to continue to impact air quality throughout the Bay Area tomorrow. Hazy skies may be visible and the smell of smoke is possible at high elevations. Air quality is expected to be in the Moderate category on the Air Quality Index.

The Air District is issuing an air quality advisory for smoke for the upper portion of the North Bay tomorrow, Friday, November 1, through Sunday. Winds will be light near the fires which will allow some of the smoke to drop south to Windsor, Santa Rosa and potentially northern Napa Valley. Air quality in the upper North Bay will be moderate with some hourly readings in the unhealthy for sensitive groups range on the Air Quality Index scale. For the rest of the Bay Area, air quality is expected to be in the good to moderate range for the rest of the week.

As part of this initiative, the Air District Board authorized up to $1.3 million of upgrades in public schools in Richmond, North Richmond, San Pablo, and Tara Hills. An additional $1.7 million will be used to expand air filtration upgrades in schools in Bayview-Hunters Point in San Francisco, and $1 million will be allocated to the Air District’s Home Air Filtration program.
