Smoke from the Pacific Northwest wildfires is expected to impact air quality in the Bay Area on Thursday. The Air District and Contra Costa Health Services are working together to investigate all potential sources of odors that fouled the air in San Francisco and Point Richmond earlier this week. Sources under investigation include the Richmond Chevron Refinery, West Contra Costa County Composting Facility, shipping traffic, and sewage treatment facilities.

Today, the South Coast Air Quality Management District filed a petition challenging the U.S. EPA and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s rollbacks to the Safer Affordable Fuel-Efficient Vehicles Rule initiated by the Trump Administration. The Bay Area Air Quality Management District and the Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District have joined South Coast AQMD as co-petitioners.

The Air District is announcing the start of the Spare the Air summer smog season on Monday, May 2. Millions of cars on our roadways each day remain the largest source of summertime smog pollution and greenhouse gas emissions in the Bay Area. The Spare the Air campaign encourages Bay Area residents to drive less and look for ways to share, shorten, or change their commutes to help reduce smog, traffic, and gridlock in the region.
