A joint prosecution by the Contra Costa District Attorney and Bay Area Air District has resulted in a $10 million penalty against Martinez Refining Company, along with compliance improvements at its Martinez refinery, and $600,000 in mitigation payments for supplemental environmental projects.

The Air District will host a public meeting session on Thursday, October 10, regarding a permit application that was filed by Radius Recycling, formerly Schnitzer Steel Products Company. Members of the public are invited to attend to learn about and comment on this permit application.  

The Bay Area, San Joaquin, and South Coast Air Districts, in cooperation with the California Air Resources Board, are hosting a public stakeholder workgroup meeting about the implementation of California’s $423 million allocation of the Volkswagen Environmental Mitigation Trust on Monday, May 6 at 10 AM in San Francisco. 

The Air District is hosting a community workshop in San Leandro, the first in a series of 10 workshops to be held within the next three months, to begin implementation of state law AB 617 which requires reduction of air pollution in communities with high air pollution burdens. 

The Air District is issuing a Spare the Air Alert for smog on Wednesday, July 10.  Air quality is forecast to be unhealthy. Very high inland temperatures in the 100’s and weak afternoon sea breeze, along with motor vehicle exhaust, will create elevated concentrations of ozone, or smog.

The Air District and the steering committee for the Richmond–San Pablo Community Air Monitoring Plan will host the Path to Clean Air Community Summit on Saturday, November 2, from 10:00 AM – 1:30 PM at the Richmond Memorial Auditorium located at 403 Civic Center Plaza in Richmond.

The Air District and partners in an initiative to cut air pollution and protect endangered whales announced results from the 2019 program and recognized the 15 shipping companies that participated, reducing speeds to 10 knots or less in the San Francisco Bay Area and the Santa Barbara Channel region.

The Air District and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission today marked the 10-year anniversary of the Bay Area Commuter Benefits Program, which requires employers with 50 or more full-time employees in the region to enroll in the program, select the commuter benefit option they will provide, and identify how they will promote that benefit to employees. 

The Air District showcased the Bay Area’s leadership in clean air, climate innovation, and equity at the United Nations Climate Change Conference or COP30, held in Belém, Brazil from November 10 through November 21. During a virtual media availability on November 13, Air District leadership reflected on the importance of local and regional action to drive global climate progress.

The Air District is extending the Spare the Air Alert due to wildfire smoke from the Glass Fire in Napa and Sonoma counties through Saturday, October 10, which bans burning wood, manufactured fire logs or any other solid fuel, both indoors and outdoors. While onshore winds will continue to blow smoke out of much of the Bay Area, localized impacts near the Glass Fire will continue. 

The Air District is hosting a virtual Climate Tech Marketplace event, Cutting-Edge Governments: Leading Investment in the Green Revolution, on October 22 at 10 AM. The event’s keynote speaker is Mariana Mazzucato, author and economist who helped shape the Green New Deal. She will be addressing the roles the public and private sectors must take to ensure growth is more innovation-led, inclusive and sustainable. 

The Air District is extending an air quality advisory due to wildfire smoke from wildfires in the western U.S. and Canada through Saturday, August 10. An inversion layer combined with local pollution and residual smoke from fires in the western U.S. and Canada continues to impact air quality in the Bay Area, causing hazy and smoky skies. Air quality is expected to be Good to Moderate on the Air Quality Index.

The Air District is extending an air quality advisory for wildfire smoke through tomorrow, Saturday, September 10. Smoke from wildfires in California and Oregon is expected to continue to impact the Bay Area through Saturday, but pollutant levels are not expected to exceed the national 24-hour health standard. A Spare the Air Alert is not in effect. Smoky, hazy skies may be visible and the smell of smoke may be present. 

The Air District is announcing the launch of the Charge! Program’s grant application process to access at least $10 million in grant funding to offset the cost of purchasing and installing new chargers for light-duty electric vehicles at multi-family housing facilities, destinations, transit parking locations, and workplaces across the Bay Area. This funding is available to businesses, homeowner associations, non-profits, public agencies, and tribes. Applications are being accepted now through June 6, 2025, at 5PM.

The Air District is sending representatives to attend the United Nations Climate Change Conference, or COP29, in Baku, Azerbaijan from November 11 through November 22. Air District Board of Directors Chair Davina Hurt and Executive Officer Dr. Philip Fine will hold a virtual press conference on Tuesday, November 19 at 10 AM.
