Wildfire smoke from numerous fires inside and outside of the Bay Area is continuing to cause elevated levels of smoke pollution.

The Air District has fined Marathon Martinez Refinery, which is operated by Marathon subsidiary Tesoro Refining & Marketing Company LLC, $372,500 for 13 Notices of Violation that include tank-related violations, uncertified pieces of equipment at their on-site gas dispensing facility and reporting delays.

The Air District is hosting a community workshop in San Leandro, the first in a series of 10 workshops to be held within the next three months, to begin implementation of state law AB 617 which requires reduction of air pollution in communities with high air pollution burdens. 

The Air District is issuing a Spare the Air Alert for tomorrow, Tuesday, December 26, which bans burning wood, manufactured fire logs or any other solid fuel, both indoors and outdoors. Although gathering around a fireplace may be a Christmas tradition for many, there are serious health impacts associated with wood burning. Use of all wood-burning devices is prohibited.

The Air District is extending an air quality advisory for wildfire smoke through Thursday, September 16. Wildfires across Northern California continue to produce smoke, which is being transported towards the Bay Area. As a result, hazy and smoky conditions are predicted through Thursday. Smoke is forecast to stay mostly aloft, and air quality is expected to be in the moderate AQI category. Pollution levels are not expected to exceed federal health standards and no Spare the Air Alert is in effect. 

On May 2, the Air District is launching the 2016 Spare the Air season, which focuses on reducing ozone, or smog-forming pollution during the warmer summer months. The Spare the Air program encourages Bay Area residents to reduce air pollution every day by rethinking their commute and avoiding driving alone.
