The Air District is extending the Spare the Air Alert due to wildfire smoke from the Glass Fire in Napa and Sonoma counties through Saturday, October 10, which bans burning wood, manufactured fire logs or any other solid fuel, both indoors and outdoors. While onshore winds will continue to blow smoke out of much of the Bay Area, localized impacts near the Glass Fire will continue.

The event’s keynote speaker is Mariana Mazzucato, author and economist who helped shape the Green New Deal. She will be addressing the roles the public and private sectors must take to ensure growth is more innovation-led, inclusive and sustainable.

The Air District and Alameda County District Attorney Ursula Jones Dickson filed a joint civil lawsuit against Radius Recycling, formerly Schnitzer Steel Industries, for air quality violations related to the fire at the company’s facility in West Oakland on August 9-10, 2023. In addition, previous enforcement actions by the Air District and the district attorney required Radius Recycling to install new equipment that has eliminated hundreds of tons of air pollution and reduced cancer risk by 84 percent since 2022; today the Air District finalized the operating permit for this important equipment.

Program’s grant application process to access at least $10 million in grant funding to offset the cost of purchasing and installing new chargers for light-duty electric vehicles at multi-family housing facilities, destinations, transit parking locations, and workplaces across the Bay Area. This funding is available to businesses, homeowner associations, non-profits, public agencies, and tribes. Applications are being accepted now through June 6, 2025, at 5PM.

Smoke from the Butler and Green wildfires has been moving down the Sacramento Valley and is expected to impact air quality in the eastern portion of the Bay Area down to Santa Clara Valley on Thursday and Friday. Conditions can change rapidly and the amount and location of smoke at ground level is hard to predict. The public can check for real-time smoke pollution levels in their local area with the U.S. EPA’s Fire and Smoke Map. Smoky, hazy skies may be visible, the smell of smoke is possible and air quality may become unhealthy at times on Thursday and Friday.
