The Bay Area Air Quality Management District today announced a recent settlement with Chevron U.S.A to pay a $146,000 civil penalty for air quality violations at its refinery in Richmond. The settlement covers 22 notices of violation that the Air District issued for incidents that occurred between 2012 and 2014. 

Sharon Landers, interim executive officer of the Air District, has offered a statement about the Supreme Court's decision today that limits the U.S. EPA's authority to regulate carbon emissions.

The Pilot Trip Reduction Grant Program is a competitive solicitation that provides funding to support the demonstration of innovative, first- and last-mile alternatives to fixed-route shuttle service. 

The program will open at 10AM on August 26, 2016, on a first-come, first-served basis for homeowners and landlords to replace their wood burning device. Funding will be prioritized for low-income residents, residents located in areas highly affected by wood smoke, and households exempt from burn bans due to a wood-burning device being the sole source of heat. Starting November 1, 2016, anyone whose sole source of heat is a wood-burning device must use an EPA-certified or pellet-fueled device that is registered with the Air District to qualify for an exemption.

Today, the Air District Board of Directors voted to retain Sharon Landers as the interim executive officer beginning Monday, May 23, for a nine-month contract. Ms. Landers will serve as the Air District’s interim executive officer while the Air District Board begins its search for a candidate to permanently fill the role.

The Air District is hosting a series of open houses to present potential new control measures and strategies that may be included in the 2016 Clean Air Plan/Regional Climate Protection Strategy, and proposed revisions to Regulation 2, Rule 5, New Source Review of Toxic Air Contaminants.

The Air District will host a signing ceremony for mayors, city and county government officials, and leaders of industry and business from all over the world who commit to going diesel free by signing the Statement of Purpose to cut diesel use to zero by 2033. 

On December 28, the Air District announced that Valero Refining Co. agreed to pay $142,000 to settle violations at its refinery in Benicia. The settlement covers a group of 20 notices of violation issued to the company for non-compliance with air quality regulations that occurred largely in 2015.

The Air District is announcing a new air monitoring station in Benicia as part of the agency’s efforts to establish or expand air monitoring stations in areas where large sources of pollution may contribute to localized pollution sources that are not captured by the Air District’s existing network.

The Air District’s Finance Office has received the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association for its fiscal year 2025–2026 budget document. The Air District’s Director of Finance, Stephanie Osaze, also received a Certificate of Recognition for Budget Preparation, instrumental in achieving this award.

The Air District is inviting Bay Area residents to apply for the Clean Cars for All grant program which provides up to $9,500 for low-income members of communities disproportionately affected by air pollution to retire older vehicles and replace them with a hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or electric vehicle, or get a Clipper Card for public transit. 

Due to the significant heat wave and energy shortages, Governor Gavin Newsom proclaimed a state of emergency that allows the use of backup generators and similar backup power sources to reduce the strain on grid-based electrical power.  The proclamation is in effect until 11:59 PM on September 8.  

The Air District is issuing an air quality advisory due to smoke from a structure fire in Redwood City for the afternoon of Monday, June 3. Localized smoke impacts are possible near and downwind of the construction facility including Redwood City, Palo Alto, Mountain View, Santa Clara and into San Jose.

On July 15, 2020, the Air District’s Board of Directors will hold a public hearing to consider approval of Emissions Statement Certification for the 1997, 2008 and 2015 8-hour Ozone National Ambient Air Quality Standards.  The public comment period is now open and will close on Monday, July 6, 2020.

The Air District announced today that it is requesting approval of an abatement order with the agency’s independent Hearing Board to end a significant excess emissions violation by Valero Refining Co. at its Benicia refinery. 

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District will ask Bay Area employers to sign the Cut the Commute Pledge to extend remote work options for employees at a press conference in San Jose on Monday, July 13 at 11:30 a.m. A continuation of remote work can help maintain the Bay Area’s air quality progress even after shelter-in-place orders are eased.
