The Air District is extending the Spare the Air Alert through Sunday, December 17, which bans burning wood, manufactured fire logs or any other solid fuel, both indoors and outdoors. Smoke from wood burning combined with light winds and low overnight temperatures is expected to continue causing air quality to be unhealthy in the Bay Area. A high-pressure system in place over Northern California will act like a lid, trapping smoke at ground level, and offshore winds are forecast to transport air pollution from the Central Valley into the Bay Area.

The Air District is issuing a smoke advisory today due to multiple fires that developed overnight in the North Bay. Heavy smoke from these wildfires in the North Bay counties is causing very unhealthy air quality throughout the region and the smoke is moving into other parts of the Bay Area due to winds.

The Air District is implementing a $14 million grant program to promote electric vehicle adoption in the Bay Area. This funding is available to both public and private entities to encourage turnover of their fleets to electric vehicles.

The Clean Air Center Program provides funding for county agencies in the San Francisco Bay Area to create a network of clean air centers to mitigate the adverse public health impacts due to wildfires and other smoke events.

The Air District showcased the Bay Area’s leadership in clean air, climate innovation, and equity at the United Nations Climate Change Conference or COP30, held in Belém, Brazil from November 10 through November 21. During a virtual media availability on November 13, Air District leadership reflected on the importance of local and regional action to drive global climate progress.

The Air District has opened registration for businesses from across the region to compete in the Great Race for Clean Air, a friendly competition that encourages employees to carpool, vanpool, walk, bike or ride transit to work, instead of driving alone.

Today the Air District’s Board of Directors unanimously adopted one rule and two new rule amendments, part of a larger overall suite of new refinery-focused regulations that further tighten air pollution controls on petroleum refining activity in the Bay Area.

In an effort to enhance the ability of the public to make timely comments on all new or modified permit applications, the Air District is implementing a fixed 10-Day Public Participation Period at the beginning of its permit evaluation process.

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District announced today that the agency’s independent Hearing Board has ordered Tesla to correct air quality violations at its electric vehicle manufacturing facility in Fremont. A written order is expected to be issued this week.
