The Air District is announcing the availability of $5 million through the Charge! program, which provides grant funding to offset the cost to purchase and install new chargers for light-duty electric vehicles.

Spare the Air Status

The program funds the installation of electric vehicle charging stations along transportation corridors, at multi-family housing facilities, destinations, transit parking locations, and workplaces across the Bay Area.

The Charge! program has been updated to prioritize investments at multi-family housing sites, specifically affordable and below market rate housing sites, and in Priority Population Areas as defined by the California Air Resources Board. Funding is available to public agencies, businesses, homeowner associations, and non-profits. Applications are being accepted through March 3, 2023.

The minimum qualifying grant for each project proposal is $250,000, except for government-sponsored projects and projects exclusively located at multi-family housing sites, which must qualify for a minimum grant of $10,000. Project proposals in regions with low charger density will be prioritized. For additional information, including program guidance documents and the online application, visit www.baaqmd.gov/charge.

Charge! program funding comes from a surcharge on motor vehicles registered in the Bay Area, which, since 1991, has also supported programs for clean air vehicles and infrastructure, ride sharing, shuttles and bicycle facilities.
