Twenty three shipping companies participated in the Protecting Blue Whales & Blue Skies vessel speed reduction program in 2022, contributing to cleaner air, safer whales, and a quieter ocean. Companies are recognized for their vessels transiting at ten knots or less in the San Francisco Bay Area and the Southern California region.

The Air District, California Air Resources Board and San Francisco Department of Emergency Management announced today the launch of the state’s first Clean Air Center in the Bayview Hunters Point neighborhood in San Francisco. In the coming weeks, more than 300 Clean Air Centers will be available throughout the Bay Area, when air quality is poor due to wildfires.

The Air District is extending the Spare the Air Alert for wildfire smoke through Saturday, September 5, which bans burning wood, manufactured fire logs or any other solid fuel, both indoors and outdoors. This will be the 18th and 19th consecutive Spare the Air Alert called due to wildfire smoke. Smoke from fires in Santa Cruz and Marin Counties, as well as other large fires in northern California, are expected to create isolated pockets of unhealthy air quality in the North Bay, San Francisco, and the East Bay. The rest of the Bay Area is expected to have good to moderate air quality.
