A joint prosecution by the Contra Costa District Attorney and Bay Area Air District has resulted in a $10 million penalty against Martinez Refining Company, along with compliance improvements at its Martinez refinery, and $600,000 in mitigation payments for supplemental environmental projects.

The Air District is convening a community workgroup to inform development and implementation of our new Particle Fallout Sampling Program for refinery communities. We are looking for people who live or work near the Chevron, Marathon, MRC, Phillips 66, and Valero refineries, or who represent organizations and environmental groups that serve these communities.

In the wake of record-breaking wildfires and hurricanes that have decimated the U.S., the Trump administration has announced a directive today to order the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to rewrite the Clean Power Plan and jeopardize hard-fought climate gains. The effects of climate change are being realized worldwide as global temperatures rise and catastrophic weather patterns escalate.

The  Air District has received a $298,114 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to enhance air quality monitoring in the Bay Area. The Air District is partnering with Communities for a Better Environment to implement the project funded by this grant in East Oakland, a densely populated community faced with a high air pollution burden.
