Air Quality Fact

When the weather is warm and stagnant, high concentrations of ozone can form. Ground level ozone irritates the lungs and is unhealthy to breathe, especially for people with repiratory problems, children, the elderly, and anyone who exercises outdoors.

How to Report a Wood Burning and Wood Smoke Complaint

For complaints regarding:

  • Burning either indoors or outdoors during a Winter Spare the Air Alert (non-food cooking fires only);
  • Excessive smoke coming from a chimney;
  • Burning of trash, plastics, or other potentially illegal wood burning activity;

Please use our Online Wood smoke Complaint Form or call 1-877-4NO-BURN to report the activity.  To bypass the phone message, please press 1 then 1 to go directly to the complaint reporting part of the phone system.

The Air District also has translation services to accommodate non-English languages spoken in the Bay Area. For only those non-English speakers wishing to submit a wood smoke complaint, please call 1-800-334-6367.
