Smoke from the Pacific Northwest wildfires is expected to impact air quality in the Bay Area on Thursday. On July 14, the Air District released draft amended rule language outlining potential exemptions and a delayed start date for the existing zero-NOx residential water heater requirement under Air District Rule 9-6. The Air District and Contra Costa Health Services continue to work together to investigate the source of odors that fouled San Francisco and Richmond on December 28 and 29. The joint investigation has ruled out any sources on San Francisco Bay, including ships or oil spills on the water, and now centers on Chevron’s Richmond refinery and other potential sources in Richmond, such as the waste water treatment plant, waste management facility, and other industrial sources.

Golden Gate Zero Emission Marine announced today the beginning of construction of the Water-Go-Round, a first-of-its-kind hydrogen fuel-cell boat. Funding for the project comes from a $3 million grant to the Air District from the California Air Resources Board.

The Air District Board of Directors has adopted amendments to Regulation 9, Rules 4 and 6, to eliminate emissions of nitrogen oxides, or NOx, from residential and commercial natural gas furnaces and water heaters in the Bay Area by requiring new appliances to be zero-NOx.

The San Francisco Bay Area Water Emergency Transportation Authority and the Air District announced that WETA’s Gemini Class Clean Air Conversion Project has been completed, resulting in a substantial decrease in air pollution emissions from four San Francisco Bay Ferry vessels serving Oakland, Alameda, and Richmond.

Today, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District announced that Value Plumbing Co., Inc., of Oakley, California, has agreed to pay $310,000 in a settlement filed with the Superior Court of the State of California in the County of Contra Costa for installing uncertified residential water heaters in the Bay Area.
