Proposed Methodology for Determining Local Health Risks from Fine Particulate Matter (PM2.5)

The Air District is seeking comments on a draft white paper and accompanying spreadsheet that proposes and illustrates a methodology for modeling health risks attributable to local sources of fine particulate matter, or PM2.5.

The purpose of this methodology is to support the assessment and regulation of health risks from PM2.5 at a local level. This proposed methodology has been developed by the Air District with guidance from the Air District's Advisory Council in consultation with staff at the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the California Air Resources Board, and California's Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment.

The white paper only proposes and demonstrates a methodology. Applications of the methodology - for example, setting thresholds or use in a regulatory context - will be discussed in later public forums and workshops. At this time, the Air District seeks comments only related to the methodology. The methodology will be discussed at upcoming Advisory Council meetings.
