Commercial Lawn & Garden Equipment Exchange Program

Learn about the Air District's Commercial Lawn and Garden Equipment Exchange Program,which provides real emission benefits by exchanging conventional, high-polluting, gasoline-powered commercial lawn and garden equipment with zero-emission equipment.

The Air District's Commercial Lawn and Garden Equipment Exchange Program provides funding to public agencies within the Air District’s jurisdiction for new, battery-powered, zero-emission electric lawn and garden equipment in exchange for turning in operable gasoline-powered lawn and garden equipment for scrapping. This program provides emission-reduction benefits and reduces air pollution by replacing conventional, high-polluting, gasoline-powered commercial lawn and garden equipment with zero-emission equipment.

Funding for this program was made available through a mediation process that required that penalties be paid to improve air quality in the San Francisco Bay Area, with priority given to areas in Alameda and Contra Costa counties near and where the air pollution infraction occurred.

The types of equipment targeted include lawn mowers, leaf blowers, sweepers, chainsaws, line trimmers, and hedge trimmers. In addition to funding for the purchase of equipment, funds are available for the purchase of batteries for each piece of electric equipment as well as battery chargers. The gasoline-powered lawn and garden equipment, to be replaced by battery-powered equipment, must be scrapped at a licensed metal recycling facility.

The new kinds of equipment that can be funded under this solicitation are commercial lawn and garden products manufactured by Green Station, Mean Green Products, Stihl, and TMC, as well as other commercial grade, battery-powered lawn and garden equipment that may be approved on a case-by-case basis.

Applications are being accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until all available funds have been exhausted. The application must be accompanied by a Letter of Commitment or a Board Resolution in support of the proposal.
