The Air District urges residents to celebrate responsibly this Fourth of July by avoiding personal fireworks, which can elevate air pollution and increase wildfire danger. Fireworks release smoke and fine particulate matter pollution, contributing to temporary spikes in unhealthy air quality.

“On the Fourth of July, personal fireworks can fill neighborhoods with smoke, cause unhealthy spikes in air pollution and increase fire danger,” said Dr. Philip Fine, executive officer of the Air District. “We encourage residents to choose official, professional fireworks displays instead to help protect public health and reduce wildfire danger across the Bay Area.”

The Bay Area often exceeds air quality health standards the evening of July 4 and morning of July 5 due to neighborhood fireworks displays. Air pollutants from exploding fireworks can worsen respiratory conditions, aggravate heart disease, and cause coughing, wheezing, and eye irritation. Children, seniors and those with preexisting health concerns are especially vulnerable. Fireworks can also lead to brush, structure, or wildland fires that cause property damage and even greater air pollution.

Bay Area residents are encouraged to check local event listings or city government websites to locate organized firework displays in their community.
