Smoke from the Gifford Fire is expected to impact air quality in the Bay Area on Tuesday. Residents in affected areas should stay alert to news coverage and health warnings related to smoke. The program will open at 10AM on August 26, 2016, on a first-come, first-served basis for homeowners and landlords to replace their wood burning device. Funding will be prioritized for low-income residents, residents located in areas highly affected by wood smoke, and households exempt from burn bans due to a wood-burning device being the sole source of heat. Starting November 1, 2016, anyone whose sole source of heat is a wood-burning device must use an EPA-certified or pellet-fueled device that is registered with the Air District to qualify for an exemption.

Effective July 1, the Air District is expanding the Vehicle Buy Back Program, which takes older, high-polluting vehicles off the road that would otherwise likely remain in operation. The program is increasing the incentive amount to $2,000 per vehicle and including vehicles that are model year 2000 and older.

The Air District and the Metropolitan Transportation Commission are announcing a new compliance option for the regional Commuter Benefits Program. In addition to the four options employers can currently choose to comply with the regional commuter program, employers can now choose Option 5: Telework.
