In the wake of record-breaking wildfires and hurricanes that have decimated the U.S., the Trump administration has announced a directive today to order the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to rewrite the Clean Power Plan and jeopardize hard-fought climate gains. The effects of climate change are being realized worldwide as global temperatures rise and catastrophic weather patterns escalate.

The Air District will host an in-person conversation with Air District Board Chair Davina Hurt on Saturday, November 2, 2024, from 12 noon – 1 PM at the East Palo Alto Community Room in the East Palo Alto Public Library. The conversation will focus on community questions and concerns regarding air quality issues and climate change. 

The Air District showcased the Bay Area’s leadership in clean air, climate innovation, and equity at the United Nations Climate Change Conference or COP30, held in Belém, Brazil from November 10 through November 21. During a virtual media availability on November 13, Air District leadership reflected on the importance of local and regional action to drive global climate progress.

The Air District is extending the air quality advisory for wildfire smoke through Saturday, July 20. Smoke from fires in Northern and Southern California is expected to impact the Bay Area through Saturday. Conditions can change rapidly and the amount and location of smoke at ground level is hard to predict. The public can check for real-time smoke pollution levels in their local area with the U.S. EPA’s Fire and Smoke Map. 

The Air District is closely monitoring flaring at the Chevron Refinery in Richmond and has issued an air quality advisory as localized smoke impacts are possible near and downwind of the facility, including the Contra Costa County cities of Richmond, San Pablo, Pinole, and Hercules, as well as Solano County. This is based on current meteorological conditions which can change depending on the duration of the flaring. Residents should follow instructions from local health officials.

The Air District is announcing the start of the Spare the Air summer smog season on Monday, May 2. Millions of cars on our roadways each day remain the largest source of summertime smog pollution and greenhouse gas emissions in the Bay Area. The Spare the Air campaign encourages Bay Area residents to drive less and look for ways to share, shorten, or change their commutes to help reduce smog, traffic, and gridlock in the region.

The annual Youth for Environment and Sustainability, or YES, Conference, co-sponsored by the Air District, returns to the Bay Area on Saturday, February 24, 2018.  It will be held at Laney College, 900 Fallon Street in Oakland from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. The free day-long regional conference will bring together middle and high school students from the nine Bay Area counties to discuss topics ranging from climate change and public health to transportation and air pollution.

The Air District is sending representatives to attend the United Nations Climate Change Conference, or COP29, in Baku, Azerbaijan from November 11 through November 22. Air District Board of Directors Chair Davina Hurt and Executive Officer Dr. Philip Fine will hold a virtual press conference on Tuesday, November 19 at 10 AM.
