The Air District has opened the grant application period for the People’s Air Grant Program, a funding opportunity designed to support local stakeholders working to improve air quality and public health in communities disproportionately burdened by air pollution. The Air District announced the recipients of the 2016 James Cary Smith Community Grant Program awards. The Air District used available funding to back 11 community-based partnership projects within the nine-county Bay Area region for a total of $261,274. The projects will increase awareness and engagement about air quality issues and initiate ways to reduce air pollution.

The Air District has received a $298,114 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to enhance air quality monitoring in the Bay Area. The Air District is partnering with Communities for a Better Environment to implement the project funded by this grant in East Oakland, a densely populated community faced with a high air pollution burden.
