Learn about incentive programs that reduce the cost of exchanging high-polluting, gasoline- and diesel-powered lawn and garden equipment with electric, battery-powered alternatives.
We are developing a new incentive program for commercial operators, launching mid-2025. Sign up for email notifications about program updates and funding availability. Additional information about state funding and past Air District-sponsored residential and commercial programs is available on this page.
The Air District is developing a voucher incentive program to help commercial operators transition to zero-emission lawn and garden equipment. Eligible applicants will visit an authorized vendor to request a voucher and submit the required documentation. Once approved, they can return to exchange qualifying equipment and receive a discount on new electric lawn and garden equipment. The program is expected to launch mid-2025. Note that vouchers are not retroactive, so any purchases made before an application is approved are not eligible for discounts.
If you are interested in learning about this program, participating as an authorized vendor, or joining as an applicant, sign up to receive the latest updates by email. We will use this list to notify you when the program opens and provide complete information about eligibility requirements.
The California Air Resources Board, in partnership with CALSTART, is offering voucher incentive funding to small businesses and sole proprietors to upgrade professional landscaping equipment to zero-emission alternatives. Funding is provided through the California Off-Road Equipment, or CORE, Program. Visit the CORE website for more information.
The following programs provided emission-reduction benefits and reduced air pollution by replacing conventional high-polluting gasoline-powered commercial lawn and garden equipment with zero-emission equipment.
In 2014, the Lawn Mower Exchange Program offered Bay Area residents a $145 rebate on the purchase of new cordless zero-emission electric lawn mowers, in exchange for turning in their operable gasoline-powered lawn mowers for scrapping. This $364,000 program was co-funded by the California Air Resources Board’s Air Quality Improvement Program and through the Air District's Mobile Source Incentive Fund.
From 2015–2018, the Air District implemented a Commercial Lawn and Garden Equipment Exchange Program for “the improvement of air quality in the Bay Area, and in particular, Contra Costa and Alameda Counties,” through the award of nearly $1 million dollars in settlement monies. Funding was provided to public agencies (such as schools and city public works and parks departments) in Contra Costa and Alameda counties to upgrade (by scrapping) older operable lawn and garden equipment to new battery-powered zero-emission electric equipment.
