Locomotives

Air District funding is available to replace existing diesel locomotives and locomotive engines with Tier 4, hybrid, or zero-emission locomotives or locomotive engines.

How to Apply

Visit our Apply for Funding web page to apply. There are multiple funding sources available for locomotive projects. After you submit an application, Air District staff will review your proposal and determine whether your project is a match for any of our funding sources.

Eligible Project Types

  • Replacement of an entire locomotive 
  • Repower of a locomotive engine 
  • Replacement of a head end power (HEP) unit

Key Eligibility Criteria

  • Class 1 and Class 2 locomotives
  • Class 3 military, industrial, and passenger locomotives
  • Locomotives with minimal emission control technology (Tier 0 – Tier 2 standard)
  • Priority is given to projects that reduce emissions in AB 617 Communities

Please contact us for additional information about project requirements and eligibility criteria. If you have a project that may not meet all eligibility criteria, please contact us to discuss it.

The following programs can fund locomotive projects. If you prefer a particular funding source, please note that in your application.

Unless otherwise noted, applicants do not need to apply under a specific funding source. After submission of an application, staff will review and match your project with an appropriate funding source.
