Clean HEET Program Eligibility Summary

  • Only existing wood-burning stoves or pellet stoves, fireplace inserts, or open-hearth fireplaces are eligible. 
  • Device must be indoor, operational, manufactured before 2020, and currently in use to burn wood for heating purposes. No cooking appliances.
  • Only electric heat pumps qualify as replacement devices. No electric/gas fireplaces, air conditioners, portable devices, or electric/gas furnaces.
  • A decommission-only option is available for older (uncertified) wood stoves and open-hearth fireplaces without installing an electric heat pump. 
  • No Retroactive Funding. Program participants must receive approval and a Notice to Proceed from the Air District before starting any work (i.e., placing a deposit or work order, purchasing equipment, beginning physical work). Projects that started work before receiving Air District approval do not qualify for funding. 
  • Upon approval, existing wood-burning devices must be permanently destroyed (decommissioned) and disposed of by a licensed dismantler/recycler. Projects replacing wood-burning fireplace inserts must also permanently disable the fireplace. 
  • The applicant must be the legal homeowner and provide a completed W-9 form.
  • Project work must be completed by a California licensed contractor.
  • Building permit and inspection required.
  • Project work must be completed within 4 months of approval to proceed.
