The Air District Board of Directors has adopted amendments to Regulation 9, Rules 4 and 6, to eliminate emissions of nitrogen oxides, or NOx, from residential and commercial natural gas furnaces and water heaters in the Bay Area by requiring new appliances to be zero-NOx.

The Air District is issuing an air quality advisory for smoke for the far South Bay, including Morgan Hill, San Martin, and Gilroy through Monday, July 6. Beginning late Saturday, the Park Fire broke out east of Morgan Hill. Air quality impacts are possible near the fire.

The Air District’s Board of Directors today adopted amendments to Regulation 6, Rule 5: Particulate Emissions from Refinery Fluidized Catalytic Cracking Units to further reduce particulate matter emissions from petroleum refineries. Ongoing triple-digit temperatures combined with light winds and vehicle exhaust are expected to continue causing unhealthy smog, or ozone, accumulation in the Bay Area.

On July 15, 2020, the Air District’s Board of Directors will hold a public hearing to consider approval of Emissions Statement Certification for the 1997, 2008 and 2015 8-hour Ozone National Ambient Air Quality Standards. The public comment period is now open and will close on Monday, July 6, 2020.
