The Air District is celebrating 50 years of air quality progress as local residents and others around the world celebrate the golden anniversary of Earth Day this week. 

The Air District is asking residents to not burn wood in their fireplaces or woodstoves tonight and on Thanksgiving Day to help prevent air pollution from rising to unhealthy levels.

In an effort to enhance the ability of the public to make timely comments on all new or modified permit applications, the Air District is implementing a fixed 10-Day Public Participation Period at the beginning of its permit evaluation process.

In partnership with Acterra and the event host LinkedIn, the Air istrict is sponsoring a day-long educational conference in San Francisco aimed at helping Bay Area restaurants and food-serving institutions green their business practices and attract eco-conscious diners all while trimming their costs.

On April 27, the Air District launched the 2015 Spare the Air season, which focuses on reducing smog-forming pollution during the warmer months.  The summer Spare the Air program encourages Bay Area residents to reduce air pollution every day by rethinking their commute and avoiding driving alone.

On May 2, the Air District is launching the 2016 Spare the Air season, which focuses on reducing ozone, or smog-forming pollution during the warmer summer months. Today, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District is issuing the first Spare the Air Alert for smog in 2020. Air quality is forecast to be unhealthy tomorrow, Memorial Day, Monday, May 25. Light winds combined with triple-digit inland temperatures and vehicle exhaust are expected to cause unhealthy smog, or ozone, accumulation in the Bay Area.

The Air District is asking residents to not burn wood over the Thanksgiving holiday to help prevent air pollution from rising to unhealthy levels. Air quality is expected to be in the Moderate category on Thanksgiving Day and extensive wood burning over the holiday could cause air quality to become unhealthy, especially in inland valleys. A Spare the Air Alert is NOT in effect and wood burning is allowed, but strongly discouraged.

The Air District is announcing the start of the Spare the Air summer smog season on Monday, May 2. Millions of cars on our roadways each day remain the largest source of summertime smog pollution and greenhouse gas emissions in the Bay Area. The Spare the Air campaign encourages Bay Area residents to drive less and look for ways to share, shorten, or change their commutes to help reduce smog, traffic, and gridlock in the region.

The annual Youth for Environment and Sustainability, or YES, Conference, co-sponsored by the Air District, returns to the Bay Area on Saturday, February 24, 2018.  It will be held at Laney College, 900 Fallon Street in Oakland from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. The free day-long regional conference will bring together middle and high school students from the nine Bay Area counties to discuss topics ranging from climate change and public health to transportation and air pollution.

The Air District is issuing an air quality advisory due to wildfire smoke from wildfires in the western U.S and Canada for the rest of the day Thursday, August 8, and for Friday, August 9. An inversion layer combined with local pollution and residual smoke from fires in the western U.S. and Canada is impacting air quality in the Bay Area. As onshore winds increase this afternoon and Friday, air quality is expected to be Good to Moderate on the Air Quality Index.

The Air District is issuing another Spare the Air Alert for smoke tomorrow, Tuesday, October 29, for the entire region. Smoke from the Kincade Fire is expected to move south into the greater Bay Area today. Air quality will likely be impacted from the Kincade Fire through mid-day tomorrow. There may also be smoke from local fires, like the Suisun Marsh fire, that could further impact air quality tomorrow. Later tomorrow, offshore winds will help move smoke from the Kincade Fire back over the Pacific Ocean, but local fires could still contribute to unhealthy air quality.

The Air District is issuing a Spare the Air Alert for today, Sunday, December 8, which bans burning wood, manufactured fire logs or any other solid fuel, both indoors and outdoors. Regional wood burning and easterly winds transporting air pollution into the Bay Area from the Central Valley have contributed to high overnight concentrations of fine particle pollution and unhealthy air quality. Although light northerly winds will bring some improvement later in the afternoon and evening, parts of the Bay Area will still experience unhealthy air quality throughout the day. Breezier northeasterly winds will bring more substantial improvement in air quality for Monday.  

The Air District is issuing an air quality advisory for wildfire smoke for Sunday, August 20. Smoke from numerous fires in northern California is impacting air quality over far northwestern California. Wind patterns are helping to keep smoke away from the Bay Area today through most of the day on Sunday. However, some smoke is predicted to reach the North Bay by late Sunday afternoon, causing air quality to reach low-Moderate on the U.S. EPA’s Air Quality Index. Smoky, hazy skies may be visible in the North Bay and the smell of smoke is possible at higher elevations. Pollutant levels are NOT expected to exceed the national 24-hour health standard and there is no Spare the Air Alert in effect.
