The Air District announced today that Browning-Ferris Industries of California, Inc., and International Disposal Corp. of California, operators of the Newby Island Landfill, have agreed to pay $210,000 to settle violations that occurred at the landfill located in Milpitas.

The Air District is issuing an air quality advisory through Monday due to wildfires that began overnight throughout the greater Bay Area. Numerous lightning strikes have sparked wildfires across the region. Air quality may deteriorate in areas near or downwind of the fires, but PM2.5 is not expected to exceed the national 24-hour standard.

Today, the South Coast Air Quality Management District filed a petition challenging the U.S. EPA and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s rollbacks to the Safer Affordable Fuel-Efficient Vehicles Rule initiated by the Trump Administration. The Bay Area Air Quality Management District and the Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District have joined South Coast AQMD as co-petitioners.

Air quality in the Bay Area is forecast to be in the good range.  Winds are currently blowing smoke from the Wragg fire burning near Lake Berryessa to the north and east of our region. Smoky conditions have been observed in Yolo County and parts of the Sacramento region.

It has been reported that companies throughout the Bay Area have received letters dated January 1, 2025, February 1, 2025, and February 14, 2025, with misinformation about the Bay Area Commuter Benefits Program. These letters were not sent by the Bay Area Air District or the Metropolitan Transportation Commission and contain misinformation. Please disregard these letters if you received them. If your company is registered in the Commuter Benefits Program, you can check the Commuter Benefits Program website to verify your company's registration in the system.

The Air District is extending an air quality advisory for wildfire smoke in eastern Contra Costa County through Wednesday, July 20. Although efforts to flood the fire have begun to make progress, smoke from the Pittsburg Marsh Fire is expected to continue to impact the eastern Contra Costa cities of Pittsburg, Antioch, Oakley and Brentwood through Wednesday. Onshore winds during the daytime are expected to disperse smoke, but as winds die down overnight localized pollution levels may rise during the overnight and early morning hours. Pollutant levels are not expected to exceed the national 24-hour health standard. A Spare the Air Alert is not in effect.
