The Air District is issuing a Spare the Air Alert for Thursday, December 22, through Christmas Day, December 25, which bans burning wood, manufactured fire logs or any other solid fuel, both indoors and outdoors.

During this challenging time, the Air District is asking the public to not burn wood in their fireplaces, outdoor fire pits or woodstoves during the shelter-in-place order for COVID-19 to protect the respiratory health of all Bay Area residents.

The Air District is asking the public not to light fireworks or burn wood over the Lunar New Year holiday to keep air quality from becoming unhealthy.

The Air District's Board of Directors approved amendments to Regulation 6, Rule 3: Wood-Burning Devices and Regulation 5: Open Burning that will provide stronger public health protections and support wildfire prevention efforts through improved use of prescribed burns across the region.

The Air District is issuing the winter season’s third Spare the Air Alert for Thursday, January 1, which bans burning wood, manufactured fire logs or any other solid fuel, both indoors and outdoors.

The Air District has released a woodsmoke White Paper for public comment, which provides extensive information on wood burning in the Bay Area, the current state of the regulatory landscape for wood-burning devices, and a discussion of potential recommendations to further minimize woodsmoke emissions and exposures.

The Air District’s Clean HEET Program is now accepting applications for grants that can help to offset the cost of switching from wood-burning or pellet-burning stoves, fireplace inserts, or open-hearth fireplaces to an electric heat pump. A decommission-only option is also available for homeowners to remove existing open-hearth fireplaces or older, uncertified wood-burning stoves or inserts. Switching to an electric heat pump helps improve air quality in communities by replacing polluting wood-burning devices with cleaner heating options.

The Air District’s Clean Heating Efficiently with Electric Technology, or Clean HEET, Program will begin accepting applications for grants that can help to offset the cost of switching from a wood-burning stove or fireplace insert to an electric heat pump. The program is designed to improve air quality in communities by replacing polluting wood-burning heating devices with cleaner heating options. 

The Air District is requiring a new Residential Fireplace Disclosure for anyone selling or leasing property with a wood-burning device in the nine-county Bay Area region. Beginning June 1, anyone selling or leasing residential property within the Bay Area will be required to disclose the health hazards of wood smoke, as part of the signed disclosure documents in real estate purchase or rental transactions.

The deadline to apply to the Air District’s Clean HEET Program has been extended to September 30, 2025. Clean HEET grants are currently available to help offset the cost of switching from wood-burning or pellet-burning stoves, fireplace inserts, or open-hearth fireplaces to an electric heat pump. A decommission-only option is also available for homeowners to remove existing open-hearth fireplaces or older, uncertified wood-burning stoves or inserts.

The Air District is issuing a Spare the Air Alert for Thursday, February 5, which bans burning wood, manufactured fire logs or any other solid fuel, both indoors and outdoors.

The Air District is extending a Spare the Air Alert for wildfire smoke through Wednesday, August 26, which bans burning wood, manufactured fire logs or any other solid fuel, both indoors and outdoors.

The Air District is announcing the start of the Winter Spare the Air season, Wednesday, November 1. The Air District calls Winter Spare the Air Alerts when air quality is forecast to be unhealthy due to fine particulate pollution, primarily from wood smoke. When an alert is in effect during the Winter Spare the Air season, from November 1 through February 28, it is illegal to burn wood, manufactured fire logs, or any other solid fuel both indoors and outdoors in the Bay Area for a full 24-hours.

The Air District is issuing a Spare the Air Alert due to wildfire smoke for Wednesday, September 20 through Thursday, September 21, which bans burning wood, manufactured fire logs or any other solid fuel, both indoors and outdoors.

The Air District is issuing Spare the Air Alerts for wildfire smoke for today, Tuesday, August 18, and tomorrow, Wednesday, August 19, which bans burning wood, manufactured fire logs, or any other solid fuel, both indoors and outdoors.

The Air District is extending the Spare the Air Alert due to wildfire smoke from fires in northern California through Tuesday, October 13, which bans burning wood, manufactured fire logs or any other solid fuel, both indoors and outdoors.

The Winter Spare the Air season begins Sunday, November 1. During a Winter Spare the Air Alert, it is illegal to burn wood, manufactured firelogs or any other solid fuel, both indoors and outdoors. The season lasts until February 29, 2016.
