The Air District is extending an air quality advisory for wildfire smoke through Sunday, August 15. Smoke from Northern California and Southern Oregon wildfires is expected to continue to impact the Bay Area over the weekend. Smoke is expected to be mostly aloft with intermittent periods of smoke mixing to the surface, particularly at higher elevation locations in the North Bay Mountains, East Bay Hills, Diablo Range, and Coastal Hills. Air quality is not expected to exceed the federal health standard and therefore, no Spare the Air Alert is in effect.

The Air District is issuing an air quality advisory for wildfire smoke for Wednesday, August 18. Smoke from the Northern California wildfires is expected to again impact the Bay Area on Wednesday. Onshore winds are expected to shift to strong north/northeast winds in the Sacramento Valley, pushing smoke into the Bay Area. Smoke impacts are forecast to be more widespread than last week. Air quality is expected to be in the mid to high-moderate range and not exceed the federal health standard, so no Spare the Air Alert is in effect.

This will be the 18th and 19th consecutive Spare the Air Alert called due to wildfire smoke. Smoke from fires in Santa Cruz and Marin Counties, as well as other large fires in northern California, are expected to create isolated pockets of unhealthy air quality in the North Bay, San Francisco, and the East Bay. The rest of the Bay Area is expected to have good to moderate air quality.

The Air District's Board of Directors approved allocating $4 million in Community Air Protection Incentives funding to support home and school air filtration programs in Bay Area communities at their June 4 meeting. As part of this initiative, the Air District Board authorized up to $1.3 million of upgrades in public schools in Richmond, North Richmond, San Pablo, and Tara Hills. An additional $1.7 million will be used to expand air filtration upgrades in schools in Bayview-Hunters Point in San Francisco, and $1 million will be allocated to the Air District’s Home Air Filtration program.

The Air District is issuing another Spare the Air Alert for smoke tomorrow, Thursday, October 31, for the entire region. While good to moderate air quality is expected through most of the region tomorrow, air quality is forecast to be in the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups range in Windsor and Santa Rosa. Moderate air quality is expected throughout the rest of the North Bay with areas near the fire still impacted by unhealthy air quality. Air quality should be in the good to moderate range for the rest of the week for most of the Bay Area – which is normal this time of year.
