The Air District’s Board of Directors today adopted amendments to Regulation 6, Rule 5: Particulate Emissions from Refinery Fluidized Catalytic Cracking Units to further reduce particulate matter emissions from petroleum refineries. The rule is now the most health-protective and stringent regulation of its kind in the country.

The Air District is extending an air quality advisory for smoke for the Bay Area through tomorrow, Wednesday, November 6, 2019. Northerly winds near the Ranch Fire in Tehama County south of Redding will allow some smoke to move toward the Bay Area. The smoke is expected to continue to cause hazy skies and potentially elevated hourly air quality readings for fine particulates today and tomorrow, but air quality is not expected to exceed the federal health standard.

Smoke from this brush fire is expected to impact air quality in eastern Contra Costa County on Wednesday evening. Conditions can change rapidly and the amount and location of smoke at ground level is hard to predict. The public can check for real-time smoke pollution levels in their local area with the U.S. EPA’s Fire and Smoke Map. The Air District will continue to monitor conditions to see if impacts will continue on Thursday. Smoky, hazy skies may be visible, the smell of smoke is possible and air quality may become unhealthy as of Wednesday evening.
