The Air District is now accepting applications for its new zero-emission transport refrigeration unit, or TRU, funding program, aimed at reducing air pollution from diesel-powered refrigeration units used in the transport of perishable goods.

The program offers up to $100,000 per TRU, or 80 percent of the total cost - whichever is less - to support the replacement of diesel units with zero-emission alternatives.

"The Bay Area Air District is proud to support the transition to cleaner, zero-emission technology for transport refrigeration units via our grant programs," said Dr. Philip Fine, executive officer of the Air District. "By replacing diesel-powered TRUs, we’re helping to protect the health of communities near distribution hubs and reduce harmful air pollution across the Bay Area."

Transport refrigeration units are used to refrigerate perishable products transported by road and rail, including truck vans, and semi-truck trailers. These units are typically powered by diesel engines. Because these conveyances often cluster at distribution centers, truck stops and other facilities, nearby communities may face increased health risks from diesel particulate matter, a toxic air contaminant.

Funded projects must maintain a five-year or 10,000-hour project life and comply with annual reporting requirements. For more information and to learn about additional requirements visit www.baaqmd.gov/goods or join the TRU Funding Program webinar on May 15, 2025, at 10 a.m. at https://bit.ly/42WgVKI.

The solicitation period is open from May 7 - 28, 2025, and eligible public and private entities are encouraged to apply at www.baaqmd.gov/en/funding-and-incentives/apply-for-funding.
